Understanding 2026 JC Rank Point System
From 2026 onwards, the A-Level Rank Point system is based upon 70 RP, which means your final score will be based mainly on your best three H2 subjects and H1 General Paper.
Extra subjects such as a fourth content subject or Mother Tongue will only be counted if they help to improve your overall score.
What are the consequences?
Under this new system, you only need to do well in essentially 4 subjects. With fewer subjects being counted, achieving AAA/A and 70 RP becomes more attainable—and, in turn, more normal.
This means any small differences in grades will matter more than before so it's now harder for you to stand out based on RPs alone. This inevitably places greater emphasis on portfolio-maximising (side quests/4 H2s/H3s) apart from great academics.
How to Strategise?
Succeeding under the new system is less about having many subjects, but about building depth and strength in the subjects that matter most, while thoughtfully planning your subject combination and portfolio for university admissions and scholarship opportunities. However, if you are academically strong, then it might make sense to take 4H2s and even H3s to stand out academically.
The education landscape is increasingly complex and you must capitalise on your own strengths. Stronger students should aim for 70 RP using 3 H2 and 1 H1 (or 4 H2s) and make time to also enjoy non-academic pursuits and build up useful skills and experiences.
