JC vs Secondary School: Why Students Suddenly Struggle

A student with a decent L1R5 enters Junior College, believing they’ll top the cohort with ease. Just study smart and get good grades. How hard could that be?

To their dismay, lectures start piling up and tutorials from weeks ago start snowballing by the time their first holiday rolls around, and they no longer see the top student they envisioned themself to be.

The Demands of Junior College

It’s a common sight for students in secondary school to start struggling to stay afloat in JC, and it’s not the fault of the students.

In general, JC moves at a faster pace, with tutors sometimes even covering a chapter within a week. Students are often made to watch lectures online, with tutors covering tutorial questions in class, rushing to finish tutorials to catch up with the syllabus. With everyone’s focus on the race against time, it’s no wonder that even top students crack under this pressure

Furthermore, concepts taught in JC are deeper and more difficult to understand. For example, ‘Kinematics’ in Pure Physics merely touches the surface of calculating the motion of a body, whereas in H2 Physics, the same topic of ‘Kinematics’, is discussed with a much greater depth, where students must be adept and decisive at decomposing the X and Y components of a body in projectile motion. Covering such depth within a short span of time can prove challenging to students who have just graduated from a system where they slowly hone their skills throughout four years.

Last but not least, there is a lack of guidance from tutors in JC, meaning more independence. Such an environment demands one to possess intrinsic motivation and unwavering discipline to learn – and even for students who have such qualities, it can be difficult for them to shine when they constantly feel pressured by the clock and the rigour of lessons.

The Good Part

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. First, students can plan their time wisely and make full use of helpful resources online. For Physics students, searching up keywords like H2 Physics Formula Sheets or Definition Lists could yield good results. Such a tip may seem trivial, however, many students often underestimate their workload, trying to “portfolio-maxx” with various competitions whilst having to juggle numerous Co-Curricular Activity sessions per week. It should always be remembered that RP is king at the end of the day, and students must ensure lectures are completed to avoid falling behind with lectures and tutorials snowballing into a leviathan of work that can never be conquered.

Next, students should adapt their study methods early. If something doesn’t work for you, don’t be afraid to try a new approach, like the Pomodoro method, or even downloading productivity apps like Forest. If you scored poorly for Promotional Exams, do a quick recovery instead of mulling over failure. Take time during the December Holidays to catch up on lectures and tutorials, and brush up on your JC1 basics. Don’t forget that even the highest scoring students had started somewhere, with many people scoring multiple Us to multiple As in the A Levels.

Conclusion

Don't give up and keep pushing for success. Even 1% of effort each day can keep compounding to success in the end, and your effort will pay off. There will definitely be setbacks, but how you bounce back from it is the deciding factor of how well you do in the end. JC is tough, but always remember that you’re tougher.
