How to Choose the Best Physics Tuition in Singapore

TGC tutor guiding two students through a Physics practical

Search "best physics tuition Singapore" and you'll get a wall of centres all calling themselves the best, plus a few "Top 30" lists that rank whoever paid to be listed. That doesn't help much when you're trying to decide where your child should spend the next one or two years.

This guide is the checklist we'd use ourselves. It works whether you end up choosing TGC or somewhere else.

The 8 things to check

1Tutor: Ask who teaches the class, and whether it stays the same all year
2Class size: Get the actual maximum number, not just "small group"
3Teaching: Look for demonstrations, answering frameworks and practical skills
4Resources: Notes organised by topic, current syllabus, easy to revise from
5Reviews: Read for before and after grades, not star ratings
6Location: An easy trip after school, plus an online option for busy weeks
7Price: Ask about registration, deposit and material fees, not just the monthly fee
8Trial lesson: Go in with a topic your child is stuck on

1. Check who actually teaches the class

The name on the signboard matters less than the person in front of your child every week. Ask:

  • Who teaches my child's level, and will it be the same tutor all year?
  • What are their credentials? For example, are they MOE-trained or a scholar, and how strong is their own Physics background?
  • How long have they taught the current syllabus (O Level 6091, A Level H2 9478)?
Warning sign: a vague answer, or a tutor who changes every term.

At TGC, classes are helmed by Andrew Seah, an MOE scholar, MOE award-winning teacher and Marshall Cavendish textbook author, and our tutors include ASEAN Scholars, PhD holders and other scholars.

2. Look at class size, not just "small group"

Almost every centre says "small groups". Ask for the actual maximum number per class. Physics students get stuck at very specific points (a free body diagram, a sign in a moments question), and the tutor needs time to spot that in each student's working, not just mark the class as a whole.

Also ask: can your child send a question at night and get a proper reply? Many of our students mention this in their reviews because it's often where the real learning happens.

3. Ask how concepts are taught, not just drilled

Worksheets and past papers are necessary, but they can't be the whole lesson. Students who score well in Physics understand why the answer is what it is, which is what lets them handle unfamiliar questions in the paper. Good signs to look for:

  • Demonstrations and experiments in class, so concepts like electromagnetic induction or pressure are seen, not just described.
  • Clear answering frameworks for explain and describe questions, where most marks are lost.
  • Practical skills taught explicitly, since the practical component is assessed at both O and A Level and is often neglected.

4. Look at the resources your child takes home

Ask to see a sample of the notes. They should be organised by syllabus topic, up to date with the current syllabus, and easy for your child to revise from on their own.

At TGC, students get topic notes plus two books our tutors wrote: the Theory of Everything, which summarises every topic's content, and the Practical Guide, which covers sources of error and how to fix them in the practical exam.

5. Read reviews for specifics, not star ratings

Most established centres have good average ratings. The useful part is the detail. Look for reviews that name a starting grade, an ending grade and what changed. Generic "very good teacher!" reviews tell you very little. A few of ours, in students' own words:

"I went from an E8 in S3 WA3 to an A1 in EOY, and Mr Seah played a HUGE part in that improvement!!"

Jia Xuan, O Level

"Learning in TGC improved my grades from a C in J1 to an A in J2."

Alfie, A Level

"I was constantly failing at physics, but TGC has really helped to improve my conceptual understanding and my exam skills... I eventually jumped to an A in O Levels."

May, O Level

TGC has over 190 five-star Google reviews across our centres. Read them on Google: Potong Pasir, Bukit Timah, Bishan.

6. Make the location work for a tired student

A great tutor across the island is still a hard sell after a long school day and a CCA. Choose somewhere your child can get to easily and safely, ideally near school or a direct MRT line, so lessons don't get skipped when the term gets busy.

TGC's centres in Potong Pasir, Bukit Timah (Beauty World) and Bishan are each about a 5 minute sheltered walk from the MRT.

Busy week? TGC students can attend some lessons online when they're too busy to come down to the centre, so a packed schedule doesn't mean a missed lesson.

7. Compare price against what's included

Fees vary a lot by level, class size and tutor, and the monthly fee isn't always the full picture. Many centres have costs that only come up after you sign up, so ask for the full list upfront:

  • Registration or admin fees
  • Deposits
  • Material, notes or book fees
  • Extra charges for holiday classes, exam prep sessions or make-up lessons

Then compare what the fee actually covers: how many lessons a month and how long each one is, and whether your child can get help outside class. For typical 2026 rates by level, see how much physics tuition costs in Singapore.

Worth remembering: the cheapest option often costs more in the end if it doesn't move the grade.

8. Use the trial lesson properly

A trial lesson is the best test you have. Before it, ask your child to bring a topic they're stuck on. Afterwards, ask them:

  • Did you understand something today that you didn't before?
  • Did the tutor notice when you were lost?
  • Would you be happy to come back every week?

If the answer to the last question is no, keep looking. Your child's buy-in matters more than any ad or ranking list.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start Physics tuition?

Usually as soon as the grade starts slipping, not just before exams. Sec 3 is when most students meet Physics properly, and the foundations set then carry into Sec 4 and JC. Starting early gives time to rebuild understanding instead of just cramming technique.

Is group tuition or a private tutor better for Physics?

A private tutor gives one-to-one attention. A good small group class gives that attention plus structured resources, classmates working through the same problems, and tutors who teach the syllabus full time. For most students, a well-run small group is the better value.

Can tuition really help if my child is failing Physics?

Yes. Many of our students started at a D7 or E8. When a student is failing, the cause is usually a few foundational gaps, not ability. Every student can improve once those gaps are found and fixed.

Which levels does TGC teach?

IP, O Level (Pure and Combined Physics) and A Level H2 Physics, plus Lower Secondary Science and JC Economics. See our O Level Physics tuition, H2 Physics tuition in Singapore and IP Physics tuition pages.
